April 2025: I spent a morning in the small town of Fort Lupton during my tour of small towns north of Denver. My first stop was the busy Community Complex, and then to the Rail Road park which included outdoor fitness equipment. I was eager to discover more!

Fort Lupton is part of the Greeley, Colorado Metro Statistical Area and the Front Range Urban Corridor. Located in southern Weld County, it is mid-way between Denver and Greeley (25 miles) at the intersection of Hwy 85 (N-S) and Hwy 52 (E-W). The South Platte River runs along its western edge.

Fort Lupton – A Brief History

The city was named for Lieutenant Lancaster Lupton, who built a trading post along Adobe Creek in 1838. The trading post had 15-foot walls of adobe brick and a tower overlooking the countryside with holes on the second floor to shoot rifles at hostile people. It was one of several trading posts established along a 13-mile stretch of the South Platte River in the late 1830s, and used as such until 1859. Later operated as a stage coach station and as a house. The building fell into disrepair and crumbled to all but a portion of one wall by the early 1900s.

The modern town of Fort Lupton was established in 1881 by William G. Winbourn, about a mile south of the original fort site, aligning itself with the newly extended railroad sidetrack. It quickly became a bustling agricultural community, known for producing cattle, sheep, and poultry, and housing several canning, shipping, and feed processing businesses, as well as a sugar factory and condensed milk plant.

Keeping History Alive

In the 1950s, Ralph Haynes, a mail carrier, donated his arrowhead collection to the City of Fort Lupton – the first exhibit of a city sponsored museum, housed in the public Library

In 1982, a room in the newly built City Hall became the home of the museum. However, by 1993, the museum collection had outgrown its single room. It was decided that the lovely, old historic, library building across the street from City Hall would become the new Fort Lupton City Museum.

In 2009, the fort was reconstructed a few yards from the site of the trading post using some of the original adobe bricks. South Platte Valley Historical Park was established by the South Platte Valley Historical Society northwest of the city of Fort Lupton. It includes a reconstruction of the adobe trading post, Fort Lupton, and is a historical park about area settlement.

Supporting citizens through Activity and Recreation

In 1959, a group of citizens began work on a community sports program. The town pushed for a home for the sports programs and in 2002, built the first city Rec Center. (Source: Fort Lupton Press news article)

In October 2024, the city of Fort Lupton completed a significant expansion of their Community Recreation Center.

Today Fort Lupton is characterized by its blend of tradition and forward-looking initiatives, reflected by the city motto, “Where Tradition Builds the Future,”

5 Things that Impressed me about Fort Lupton

Visitor Things to Do

#1. The brand new state-of-the-art Community Rec Center Complex, with an long list of community programs!

My first stop was the newly renovated Rec Center, and it is beautiful! The busy parking is a testiment to the popularity of this facility to the town residents. Later, my research indicated an impressive variety of activities and programs available through the Rec Center. I like that there are programs focused on all ages – and programming includes many social activities and events. Amazing!

    • Fort Lupton Parks & Rec Activity Guide (Summer 2025 Brochure) – glance through this guide and be amazed at all the activities available in this small town! Examples include:
      • swimming, “Splash to the Movies” pool party, climbing wall, work out equipment
      • Teen Room, weekly Teen trips in the summer
      • Senior Coffee Group, Bridge Group, Bingo, Dominos, Potluck lunches, Pickleball, craft classes, Bunco, Ice cream socials, BBQ & potluck dinners
      • Outdoor boot camp, Run club, Mason Jar prep class, Stroller & Stride (workout focused on Moms!), Yoga, day care service, martial arts,
      • Casino Trips, Rockies Baseball game trips, Estes Park outing & rooftop rodeo, Coors Brewery tour, etc
  • Pricing: Memberships as well as daily drop in rates are available to residents and non-residents (and quite reasonably priced!)
  • Funding: The cost of completing the project in its first phase included funding from the City of Fort Lupton, a $790,000 Great Outdoors Colorado Grant [Colorado state lottery fund], a  $410,000 grant from the Weld Trust, and Dales Pharmacy’s $20,000 challenge grant, which helped offset some of the total park project cost (Source: Fort Lupton Press news article)

#2. Community Center Park – with Splash Pad, brand new playground equipment with shaded picnic tables and a skate park

Located right next to the Rec Center is the popular Community Center Park. Beautiful!

  • Koshio Park – Google Maps – “Great spot for Fort Lupton Movie in the Park! Kids can play while we hang out and wait for dusk with the beautiful CO sunset.” 4.5 stars
  • Cannery Park – Google Maps – “Quaint little park In Fort Lupton. Very clean and well maintained!” 4.3 stars
  • Pearson Park – Google Maps – “We really enjoy bringing our dogs out here. It’s a spacious fenced in area to pay ball and short trails around it.” 4.4 stars

#3. Railroad Park with outdoor exercise equipment – A good community use of often under-utilized land near railroad tracks!

I am calling out this specific park because I am always impressed when a town makes clever use of the land near rail road tracks! It makes a lovely and functional separation to the nearby residential neighborhood. This long thin pretty green park contains playground equipment, a horseshoe court and a Fitness Court, providing equipment and instruction for a full body workout (see my small town vibe Dacono article for more information about Fitness Courts and the National Fitness Campaign)

#4. Attractive historic downtown with vibrant local shops

I enjoyed my walk downtown along Main Street… so many community businesses!
